PROJECT MEDAUSTRON
With MedAustron, one of the most up-to-date therapy and research centres of this country will be built in Wiener Neustadt. It will concentrate on cancer treatment with the application of ion irradiation. From 2014 onwards both protons (hydrogen nuclei) and carbon-ions (carbon nuclei) will be provided for therapy and research.
Proton therapy is already an established irradiation treatment; therapy with carbot ions however is still in development (Proton therapy: 50.000 treated patiens worldwide in 17 centres; Carbon ion therapy: 5.000 treated patients worldwide in 3 centres). The patient capacity of MedAustron will be around 1.200 patients per year.
MedAustron-Research will be furnished with the necessary infrastructure and will offer a wide ranging support service in order to enable research activities in the fields of
- medical radiation physics
- radiation biology
- and experimental physics.
Cooperation is planned with Austrian universities and institutions, private researchers and international research facilities.
